Portable ventilators

چکیده

Mechanical ventilators used in intensive care units are sophisticated devices. The guiding principle in their design is the provision of optimal lung ventilation. They incorporate precise but sizeable pneumatic components intended to utilize piped gases and mains electricity. However, when transporting patients receiving ventilatory support, these devices are rarely suitable because of their size, weight, requirement of external power, and rate of gas consumption. Portable ventilators are compact devices designed to provide mechanical ventilation in settings where piped gases and mains electricity are unavailable. Modern engineering has afforded these devices a level of sophistication approaching that of a conventional intensive care ventilator. Ideally, a portable ventilator, including oxygen and battery supplies, should be lightweight, robust, and able to function in demanding environments with little maintenance. It must use available gas or electrical supplies sparingly. It should be inexpensive, simple to operate, and provide a range of effective ventilatory modes.

Temperature of gas delivered from ventilators

BACKGROUND Although heated humidifiers (HHs) are the most efficient humidifying device for mechanical ventilation, some HHs do not provide sufficient humidification when the inlet temperature to the water chamber is high. Because portable and home-care ventilators use turbines, blowers, pistons, or compressors to inhale in ambient air, they may have higher gas temperature than ventilators with ...

Evaluation of 4 new generation portable ventilators.

BACKGROUND Portable ventilators are increasingly utilized in the intra- and inter-hospital transport of patients. We evaluated 4 portable ventilators, Impact EMV, CareFusion LTV 1200, Newport HT70, and Hamilton T1, in terms of triggering, delivered tidal volume (V(T)) accuracy, battery duration, delivered F(IO(2)) accuracy, and gas consumption. METHODS Triggering was tested using a microproce...

An evaluation of home volume ventilators that support open-circuit mouthpiece ventilation.

BACKGROUND Open-circuit mouthpiece ventilation (MPV) is a form of noninvasive ventilation that can be used to provide portable daytime ventilatory support for neuromuscular patients with chronic respiratory failure. MPV has been reported to reduce the risk of respiratory infection due to tracheostomy, and to improve cough and voice function and patient quality of life. Despite these potential b...

Battery life of portable home ventilators: effects of ventilator settings.

BACKGROUND The battery life (BL) of portable home ventilator batteries is reported by manufacturers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of ventilator mode, breathing frequency, PEEP, and leaks on the BL of 5 commercially available portable ventilators. METHODS The effects of the ventilator mode (volume controlled-continuous mandatory ventilation [VC-CMV] vs pressure support ven...

Should a Portable Ventilator Be Used in All In-Hospital Transports?

Movement of the mechanically ventilated patient may be for a routine procedure or medical emergency. The risks of transport seem manageable, but the memory of a respiratory-related catastrophe still gives many practitioners pause. The risk/benefit ratio of transport must be assessed before movement. During transport of the ventilated patients, should we always use a transport ventilator? What i...
